Eastern Area Agency on Aging received a big boost to its Meals on Wheels
fundraising campaign last week, as Versant Power delivered a $10,000 check in support of the
popular nutrition program. The donation helped not only meet, but far surpass the organization’s
$6,000 goal.
The yearly campaign, called “Save the Lunch”, took on new urgency this year after the
organization announced it was forced to start a waitlist for new qualified residents in EAAA’s
service territory of Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington, and Hancock, counties. The need for a
waitlist comes from an increase in food prices and government funding for the program stalling,
while demand continues to rise.
“Versant’s generous donation will go a long way in helping older adults throughout Eastern
Maine receive much-needed nutrition through our Meals on Wheels program,” Director of
Nutrition, Chris Street said. “With our program now operating with a waitlist, every donation
helps to give more people the nutrition they so desperately need.”
Versant has been a consistent supporter of the agency and its work, having sponsored the
organization’s Healthy Aging Expo again this year, and financially supporting other initiatives
like the Furry Friends Food Bank program, and the creation of the Durgin Center.
“Organizations such as Eastern Area Agency on Aging, are an integral part of our community,”
stated Versant Power President John Flynn. “We are beyond grateful for the continued work
that EAAA does to keep our aging Mainers healthy, supported and connected to resources. We
are hopeful this support can make a difference in so many lives.”
With the Versant donation, the “Save the Lunch” campaign has officially raised $14,637 as of
April 10, 2024, totaling over 30 donations.
